What’s Your Story?

by Ryan Camana on October 5, 2009

I was walking around downtown Santa Barbara last night and as usual saw quite a few panhandlers. I’ve noticed something in the back of my mind for a few weeks now. Something about these people really bothered me. Now I’m not judging them. I am judging my reaction to them. I’m always giving them my spare change. Most of the people are nice. Some obviously have mental problems that need to be addressed. But most of them, especially the younger ones seem to have no need to be panhandling. Since studying NLP and hypnosis I’ve come to believe anyone can be great. I’ve seen it over and over with my own eyes. So why are they out there on the street instead of living a life of abundance? I finally realized this was what was really bothering me.

I decided to ask some of them. You know what they told me. They told me exactly the same thing all of my successful clients tell me at first. They give me all sorts of stories. All manners of stories about how things would be different if only such and such didn’t happen to me. If only I hadn’t got laid off. If only my mother had breast fed me. If only “the man” would leave me alone then I could succeed. Nothing I hadn’t heard before.

Believe it or not, I’ve heard every excuse imaginable. And you know who’s told me almost all of these excuses… That’s right, me! Yours truly. That voice inside my head that gives that running commentary. Every time I do something new, which is everyday (that’s a hint mind you), my brain comes up with all manners of stories. I’ve got news for you. That is what your mind is supposed to do. Your unconscious thinks in metaphors. You can tell yourself any story you want. Tell yourself long enough and with enough conviction you’ll believe anything.

For goodness sake, tell yourself a story with a good ending. You’re the only person in control of your thoughts. They don’t come from outside. If you have a story that’s not working for you. Start telling yourself a new one.

Start telling yourself about being the super successful salesperson or entreprenuer or whatever. Successful salespeople and entrepreneurs have had exactly the same problems as the panhandlers on the street. Life has not been fair to them. Life hasn’t been fair to me and it isn’t going to start.

If I could impart this one idea to you. This one blasphemous idea that YOU are actually in control of your life and how you choose to react… Well I don’t know what you could do. That’s obviously up to you.
